Why So Many Professionals Feel Stuck Right Now

New workforce data from Gallup confirms what many professionals are already feeling: work has become more stressful, career decisions feel more complicated, and confidence in the job market has dropped dramatically.

For the first time since Gallup began tracking employee wellbeing, more U.S. workers describe themselves as “struggling” than “thriving.”

Employee engagement has also fallen to its lowest level in a decade, with only 31% of workers considered engaged at work.

At the same time, confidence in the job market has sharply declined.

In mid-2022, nearly 70% of workers believed it was a good time to find a quality opportunity. By the end of 2025, that number had fallen to just 28%.

Yet despite the uncertainty, many people are still exploring their options.

Gallup reports that more than half of employees are either actively looking for a new role or watching for opportunities.

What makes this moment different, however, is that many professionals feel “stuck”. They want change, but they’re uncertain whether moving is the right decision right now.

Our team is seeing this currently in conversations with professionals across engineering, manufacturing, operations, finance, HR, and executive leadership.

Many talented individuals are asking us the same questions:

  • Is this the right time to make a move?
  • Are companies really hiring quality talent?
  • How do I identify organizations that offer stability, growth, and strong leadership?
  • Should I stay where I am and work to improve my current situation?

We believe the answer is nuanced.

While hiring conditions have certainly become more selective, we know that strong companies are still actively seeking high-performing talent – particularly individuals who bring leadership capability, adaptability, and technical or operational expertise.

Gallup’s findings also highlight important generational differences.

Younger professionals report the highest levels of frustration, disengagement, and job-search activity.

Many cite unclear expectations, lack of recognition, limited development opportunities, and concerns about leadership as key reasons for considering jumping ship.

Compensation remains a top driver for many job-seekers, but it is no longer the only factor.

Growth opportunity, career development, flexibility, organizational culture, and leadership quality are now playing a much larger role in job change decision-making.

Perhaps most telling, though, is Gallup’s finding that nearly half of active job seekers describe the current search process as negative, with many unable to secure interviews despite applying to multiple positions.

This tells us the market is genuinely more competitive while also being slower-moving.

That’s why having a strategic, relationship-driven approach to your career matters more than ever.

If you’re ready to make a move, how do you navigate today’s market?

  • Focus on fit, not just movement. A career change made out of frustration alone can lead to another difficult situation. Evaluate leadership, culture, growth potential, and stability carefully.
  • Strengthen your professional network. Many of the best opportunities are discovered through trusted relationships and partnerships.
  • Invest in your marketability. Continuous learning, leadership development, and clearly communicating your accomplishments remain critical differentiators.
  • Look for ways to improve your current situation. In some cases, candid conversations with your supervisor about growth, responsibilities, or flexibility can meaningfully improve satisfaction where you are today.
  • Leverage your recruiting partner. At Welsh & Associates, we work as your long-term career resource and advocate – helping connect you with outstanding organizations and opportunities that align with your goals, strengths, and aspirations.

Even in a challenging market, great opportunities still exist.

The key is to approach career decisions strategically and thoughtfully, with the right guidance and relationships behind you.
